Where We Danced Still Dances Without You

“Where We Danced Still Dances Without You” is a recent piece that I wrote exploring a minimalist approach to creation. Not to be confused with minimalism, I wanted to test the mileage of as few musical ideas as possible within a musical composition. How many did you really need in order to convey the emotion I wanted?

The main emotion I wanted to capture was longing, and how things can slowly shift over time without our knowledge. There’s a sliver of grief and mourning that comes with the realization of that change. It doesn’t seem jarring at the moment, but once attention is brought to it, it’s hard to ignore. This piece, like people and places, shifts slowly over its duration, lilting you into a sense of security.
